Okay, so I'm a self-help nut and I'm always reading new things to grow my mind. Every once in a while a book picks me up and slams me on my ass. The book, "The Power of Now" is one of those books. I read it when I was in Morocco a few weeks back and it's been in my head ever since. Some people do not like Ekhart because he makes claims that challenge how people look at religion, philosophy, life. I'm not a religious person but I'm open enough to look at things objectively. The premise of the book is that we live life as human "Doings" instead of human "Beings." That's why we don't know how to deal with getting older and the latter half of our life is largely an after though. He talks about the power of calling our attention to the present moment so that we don't live in our heads. Say someone cuts you off in the car and you get pissed off. You start telling yourself stories that this person did it on purpose and that they are bad and you wish you could follow them home and slash their tires... whatever, you get the gist. Those stories are where so many of us live.
To help alleviate this type of unconsciousness I started meditating. I've only been doing it for about a month and it's only after reading this book and meditating that I became aware at just how much chatter is in my head. It's absolutley insane. It's so loud now and I feel aware which is the first step; i.e. conscious incompetence, isn't that a pleasant saying; ha ha.
The reason I'm posting is that I'm just beginning this new adventure and the little bit of the surface I've begun to scratch is absolutely amazing. When I'm able to call my attention back to the present I feel stronger, more alive and more present with the people or challenge that is in front of me. After 34 years of living life one way I know it will take time and I'm not sure to what level I will take this, but it's pretty amazing. Almost like a whole new world and it's pretty freaking awesome. I thought I'd share as I'm sure this will be an area I continue to focus on.
QUOTE from the book:
Zen monk is giving a surmon and people have been coming to him for years and today he says, "Today I'm going to teach you the secret of enlightenment." Everyone perks up and eagerly listens as this is what they've been waiting for. In a simple, calm voice he says, "The secret to my enlightenment is that I do not think about things too much."
WOW! That hit me pretty hard. Simple yet profound. I think life is SO incredibly simple and the more we can strip away the crap the more fulfilled I think life can be.
Take or leave anything you want from this. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy life to the fullest. It may be our only one!
I'm glad that you are developing yourself from the inside out. 34 years to reach a state that most people dont ever reach is great. I want to suggest a book that I am reading that is really awesome, "The Tough Sayings of Jesus" it is sort and incredible. That knock you on your butt type of book also.
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving to you and all that you come in contact with.

Great Bobby! After years of not practicing I started my zen practice again 2 months ago. Working as an animator .. when you are into character the whole time during work .. its sometimes not easy to "come down" again. I'm glad I found a dharma talk class in the city I'm working now =)
ReplyDeleteI just finished the audiobook of Jakusho Kwong-roshi "Breath sweeps mind - The intimate heart of zen"
I'll have a look at "power of the moment" next
You're lucky .. living next to the sfzc ;)
and I'm a Human Going!
ReplyDeletekidding, reflecting is good, people get way too strung up about unimportant stuff

Other similar and very awakening speakers that us westerners can appreciate are in the are of Mindfulness, and Theravadin Buddhism, and the works of Ram Dass (Richard Alpert) prior to his stroke. "Thoughts without a Thinker" by Epstien, and "Buddhism without Beliefs" by Bishop are worth reading/listening.
Here is a short snippet from Ram Dass on love that I thought was good and representative of his speaking style:

Here is an inspiring snippet from a dhama talk, I forget who the speaker is:

There are so many good spiritual speakers, Eckhart being one of the better ones. Enjoy your journey!

Hehe. That's why I love Kung Fu and Buddhism;) It follows the same mindset really, my favorite was, Buddha's last words to his disciples: Do your best.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to get that book though, awesome stuff ;D!'
:dA:
Great post Bobby! I'll check it out. I have huge problems with this myself, I find I'm always making lists and never relaxing to enjoy things. I hope this works out for you! :)
ReplyDeleteHmm sounds like I might have to pick this one up. Then I just need to find time to read it between school, work and the 50 other animation books I am currently reading. I agree though, If you think about things to much they can only stress you out. Be confident, loving and life will bring to you what you give to it.
ReplyDeleteHi Bobby!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting, the next time I see you, I was planning to ask you how you manage to keep yourself so centered, motivated and positive, and here you are offing up one of those tools. Thanks a ton Bro'.

Wow, that's incredible! I was just thinking about how I think about things too much...
ReplyDeleteHey Bobby, thanks for your post. The book looks very interesting. I'm religious (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) and the principles you mentioned rang true to me.
ReplyDeleteBobby,
ReplyDeleteIf you've found Eckhart's work valuable, you may find one of my blogs worth perusing-

Hey Bobby,
ReplyDeleteI was reading your post and noticed that you weren't sure about whether or not there's an afterlife.
Something that really helped me was this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06HGc_jb6tk
It's like 9 minutes long but it's REALLY powerful.
Hey Bobby, Winter 08 AM student\ Professional Animator here. About 3 months ago I started reading some of Steven Covey's books and it has made some very positive changes to my life. I notice that you talk quite a bit about the different books you have read that have made positive changes in your life. Could give some "self-help" book recommendations.
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!!!
