Ed Catmull Visits Animation Mentor!

Today Ed Catmull came to visit Animation Mentor! It was so awesome and I'm still flying high. While I was at Pixar, Carlos and I pitched the idea to Ed right when we started to make sure it was not a conflict of interest and he gave us his blessing. We then showed it to him two more times along the way. Once just before I decided to leave.

Now that guy has a lot going on in life and he took time out to come check out where we've gone with it and it was so fun to show him. We talked, laughed and explained the journey and how it touches people's lives and doesn't just make them better animators but better people, too!

At the end he gave us a hug and told us that he never imagined we'd take it to this level and gave us some amazing comments and words of wisdom.

I will remember this day as a milestone in my life to remember that we're doing this "right" at AM and that it's fine to build a company from the heart first. Starting this company with my two best friends on the planet, although some said was a "bad idea" turned out to be the best thing EVER! The whole AM staff are so amazing and they believe in this as much as we do and that's the BEST FEELING! Dream big in life! Never let anyone tell you that you can't do it. You can!

Ps. Thanks to Fernando Herrera for being online for my AMiM chat! You rock!

  4. Wow, such greatness in the halls of....such greatness!! That's really a wonderful thing to have the blessing of Dr. Catmull. The man knows the craft like very few others, and so if HE thinks we're doing well... then we're in fanastic shape :)

And Bobby, I had no idea you actually left Pixar to run AM! Though when I think about it, the duties would become a bit overwhelming working both day jobs! So thank YOU again for starting this company. I'm in my 2nd term, and loving every step along the way! :)

  5. The greatest thing about AM is that it is global, so some like me who is sitting down at my computer in the middle of Africa can do Q&A with some one working on Transformers 2 is awesome on a level akin to science fiction

  6. Hey Bobby that is so cool!
I'm not even sure what to say!
    drat.. I really am speechless....
hahah I should wait and comment when I actually figure something out to say.
AM truly is so much more than just animation though. I cannot believe how much I've learned in the last 15 months... but what I can't believe even more... is how many life long friends I've made. I can't even count! AM is filled with amazing people with positive attitudes and an extreme love and passion for animation. We all came into the school feeling like outsiders... the ones in high school, college, or the work place, who still loved animated movies and toys (while others were out growing them)... then came Animation Mentor...and we met our own kind! lol! We discovered there were other people out there who loved animation just as much as we did. We met people who dream big in life and are actively pursuing their dream! I never imagined the friendships I'd make online would be so strong. The AM get togethers are so amazing! The Open House, BBQ, Siggraph, the group that went to Disneyland... it was all so much fun and seriously the best time of my life! I can't wait to work with my classmates!
I'm so glad Ed Catmull took the time and came to see all of the hard work you guys have done! That is just super super awesome! You guys have truly created something incredible.
gah... I wish I could put my feelings about AM into words...but just know that I can't thank you three enough! :)

  7. That is fantastic!

Every time I've heard Dr Catmull give a talk or interview I've come away from it beaming.

He is the single greatest motivational speaker, without once resorting to 'motivational speak'.

(That probably doesn't make any sense, but.. well, it does in my head!)

    Great stuff.

  11. "the journey and how it touches people's lives and doesn't just make them better animators but better people, too!"

I would have to totally agree with that statement. Leading up to my Start at AM, I mentioned that I was going to become a character animator to people as they came in the coffee shop I work at and talk to me. I also met a character designer the week before I started that lives in my area because of it.She agreed to meet with me and teach me more about drawing if I could teach her more about 3D! So I get to learn from someone in the industry in my town too!

Now this is my first week of AM. I got a call from Molly saying that i won the "Bring Spike Home contest", which helped me out a TON! I get on campus and get to meet a great group of people starting up school with me that have a lot of the same interests. I got to meet my Mentor "Steve Cunningham" who works at Dreamworks, my dream studio! (no pun intended) Then Caroline (the character designer I met) brings her husband in to meet me. He is a Director and is working on a new project with one of the guys that did the animated Star wars clone wars that i cant talk about. It was amazing talking to him over lunch and learning what he had to offer about things. Him and his wife also might have some 3D work for me in the near future! They where also nice enough to give me a Table with a animation wheel, pegboard and light box on it as well as a huge ream of animation bond paper that they had sitting around the house!

This is all in my first week of AM!
I can safely and honestly say this is THE BEST WEEK OF MY LIFE! If it only gets better from here I think I might implode from joy... if that's even possible. Its a great feeling having all this positive excited energy flowing through me! I have had my life touched by AM already and my journey has just begun!

Thanks Bobby,Shawn and Carlos for making this school and not giving up. Thanks to everyone at AM for making it the place it is and work getting excited over.
