Life is pretty amazing. I've always looked at life as something simple. When I complicate it, life can really smack me in the face. I'm happy to have had some amazing reflections this year which help remind me of who I am at my core and also challenge me to remember these things daily. For instance, I was away last week with 6 other CEOs at an offsite where we rented a place together for three days and shared about our lives, our struggles and our triumphs. I learned a lot about myself, who I am and who I am not. It was a pretty amazing experience to say the least and it was fantatastic to get to know these extrodinary people so much better.
One thing I've learned while I was away is that true happiness is not something external, it's really something that is conscious. I consider myself to be a very happy person and I do know that, at least for me, it takes a conscious effort to live this way. I feel this is the one life that I have and knowing that I could be gone tomorrow really makes me realize just how special life is.
I'm a firm believer in asking myself powerful questions. Below are a few pretty powerful questions that I find super stimulating. Knowing the answer to these questions helps me remember why I'm here, what I'm doing and where I want to go with my life. If you'd like to share your thoughts, I'd love to read them in the comments section.
1. What are the top 3 – 5 things I want to do in my lifetime?
I talked to one guy who wanted to open up a bike shop where people could come and hang out, watch bike movies etc. A few of mine are that I will build a self sustainable home with solar and wind power, learn how to swim (more than just doggie paddle :), learn a new language, learn to fly a helicopter and so on. What do you want to do?
2. What is my purpose in life? What am I doing here?
This is very individual and also very personal. However it's a powerful enough question to ask ourselves. Taking five minutes to reflect on this can really shed a BIG light on our lives and in the quality of them.
3. What is my ultimate life outcome?
Who do you want to be every day in every moment to the best of your ability? Someone cuts you off in traffic or you get your wallet stolen, who are you and who do you ALWAYS want to be in those moments, too? This one can be pretty tough, but knowing this and keeping it close to me has really helped me light up some of the darker situations that have happened in my life.
One thing I know for sure is that I want my life and my actions to be my message. I think that I am the only person I have control over and that is already enough to handle. Whatever I do, say, act and feel is my message and I try my best to remember this. We all fall down at times, but don't beat yourself up over it. Learn and grow.
4. If I were to die tomorrow how would I want to be remembered?
Wow, this one reminds me of how temporary our existence really is. When I think of this it helps me to reflect on the magic moments of each day and to look for them, write them down and keep a diary of them.
I'm not sure what inspired me to blog about this and I know that some people think this stuff is "touchy feely," but the people who I've talked to in life who really know the answers to these questions tend to really have a super high quality of life. You don't need to answer these questions, I just think they are pretty darn powerful and worthy of sharing.
Yup, you are right. This thing is very personal and it should be. I would say that these thoughts should come everyday into consideration some or the other way. ALL the time, so you are constantly LIVING, not surviving.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this Bobby.
Well i guess u need to be pretty honest with urself if u want something like this to really help u......and as Bobby said it's very personal indeed....Only if people were really honest to themselves forget others am sure the world wud b a better place........:)
ReplyDeleteI find the question of purpose very intrigueing. Most people will only go as far as to ask what their goals are. But goals are (comparatively) short-lifed, and they only serve as a small step toward a higher purpose we have for our lifes.
ReplyDeleteTo only think about your goals, and never your purpose, is like walking one step at a time without knowing where you´re heading.

"If I were to die tomorrow how would I want to be remembered?"
ReplyDeleteWhat a great question to ponder on. Lately I find myself being so wrapped up in the daily to do's that I lose track of the bigger picture.
I spent some time thinking about these questions and wrote down on paper my answers...it was strange to see things that I thought I understood fully written down. I found that by answering one question...ten more questions popped up.
It was nice to take a few moments to just stop and think. To think about why you do the things you do.
Thanks for the wonderful post Bobby! Keep up the inspiration.

1. •Experience the joy of having and raising kids.
ReplyDelete•Share the joy I know that God has for everyone.
•Be the best husband I can be.
2.Love God and Love people.
3.Keep the high road will ultimately make my life and others lives more stratifying to live.
"Stress Can Kill You!
It has been said that stress is the prime cause of all disease and discomfort in the body. This is because the stress response within the body causes such a powerful biochemical process to take place, that it can affect literally every organ and system within the human form." (http://egetbetter.com/product/D-BAP-INS-STRESS.html)
4.•I agree with you Bobby, "this one reminds me of how temporary our existence really is." Walking into a room full of strangers with the attitude of "someone here could need my help with something I am good at" or "someone here could be a good friend, if I just give them (and myself) the chance."
Thank you for your post and inspiration Bobby. Working on yourself from the inside out is beneficial for yourself and all those you connect with.

Thanks for the inspirational post Bobby!!:)
ReplyDelete1. I don't know
ReplyDelete2. I don't know
3. I don't know
4. I don't know
Crap, I've just been going through the motions! I'ma have to really think about this stuff now. Thanks for the insight, Bobby!
1. Top 3-5 Things.
ReplyDelete1. Always Keep Good company around me.
2. Let my imagination run free, and bring it to life.
3. Make 3-5 people a day laugh or smile.
4. Be happy everyday and enjoy life.
2.Whats my purpose.
(Deep question..) To express my self and through that make others smile. I can make sure I'm happy everyday. So to be able and reach out and make someone else happy, even if its just for a few sec, is really something special to me. Whether its through my work, art, actions, or something I said. To know you influenced another person in a positive way even if for a short period of time can really feel good.
3.Ultimate life outcome.
To be a calm and reasonable person. No matter how bad the situation, if your not dead or going to die from it, its probably not that bad. I like to keep my cool during tough situations. Stress only makes things worse. With a calm head and some logical thinking any situation can be assessed and remedied. It may take time, however its not the end of the world.
4.How to be remembered.
I suppose I would like to leave a mark that would be remembered even after I'm gone. Like electricity or Star wars! To be remembered as a good and loving person to those close to me.
Thanks Bobby those do really get ya thinking. Pretty deep stuff to. Just this morning my boss said something happen last night that reminded her of me and started laughing. That's a great thing to hear for me to start out my day. Gotta attract the things you want out of life!
One could talk forever on these subjects... But sometimes the most complex questions can have the most simple of answers.
ReplyDeleteAs far as what are purpose is in life; (and there is no right answer), I personally just feel it is to live our lives as happily as we can. There's too much bad in the world that we cant control and it will always be there. So I say make a difference in your life and the people around you! life is too precious and too short to focus on all the bad things!
One way you can prove this theory is think back on your life and you'll be suprised how you only really remember the good things, while in the moment you may only focus on whats bad in your life, its the good things that we remember. So make your life more memorable!! Live in the moment and be happy for what you have! you'll have more to look back on in the end!!
Love Life & Life will Love you!!!

Wow, thanks for sharing. This is so awesome. A part of me thought I'd come back to this post with people telling me I'm crazy. Ha, ha.
ReplyDeleteI updated the blogpost on #1 to reflect a few of the things i want to do in life.
William and Chad, that's so awesome of you to put up your answers. Very open to do so. I love that. It's tough some times on the internet to put yourself out there.
I'm personally so grateful to have friends who are fantastic and who share on such a deep level. My mom always told me if I had one great friend that is considered lucky. I really do have several truly fantastic friends whom I love dearly!
It's good to stir the mental pot. Yes, answering one questions opens up others, and I think that is healthy for sure. I love diving in to this stuff and am stoked to hear other people here are stimulated by these thoughts, too. Cool!!! Keep 'em comin' I love reading them.
Ehm Bobby..
ReplyDeleteI hate to break this to you, but you ARE crazy.
I didn´t mention this in my comment simply because I thought it´s no longer subject to question. :-)
Still a great post, these questions have now been boiling in my brain for a whole day and night.
Micha
Yes Bobby...I have to agree with Micha... you are a bit Coo-Coo, But that's why we like you so much.
ReplyDeleteStay Cool,
Heather :O)
Ha, ha. That made my day! I'm fine with being a little coo coo crazy! ;)
ReplyDeleteYou know Bobby, you're like the guru of happiness (you and Click and Clack)I try to be as positive as you but I can never maintain it. What's your secret? I do okay when I've gotten enough sleep and have a lot of energy, but I can't maintain it when I'm tired or stressed I just go dull and nuetral. Were you ever an angsty teenager, is this something you had to learn, or has it always come easy for you? Enlighten us master :)
ReplyDeleteHa I love that you're coo coo crazy, man! :) I am too, maybe that's why we get a long...hehe. Seriously, good post and timely for me. Thanks, I needed this little reminder.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful post, Bobby. Thank you for sharing! After all, you've gotta be tuned in to both the world and yourself if you want to make truly great animation :)
ReplyDeleteI'll be doing some thinking on those questions in my journal soon, but I can say with full sincerity being involved in animation answers in some way each one of those questions you posted. How do I want to live my life? What do I want to do before I die? Who do I want to be in every situation? There are a lot of answers, but always in the mix is my love for animation.
And thanks to Animation Mentor, I'm actually on a very real path to achieving my greatest dream. I really couldn't do this without AM, so thank YOU Bobby for seeing your goals through so that people like me reach our own! :)
Whoa, Rob that was awesome to read. Thanks so much for that. That's the fuel that keeps me going for sure!
ReplyDeleteAlonso, it's definitely a learned thing for me. I'll blog about it one day soon. It's been a journey that I've been on for a long time. The secret for me is daily reminders. I'll explain in the post soon.
Dave, you rock man. You are seriouly one of the best guys on the planet as far as I'm concerned!
Woah, i found it! Like I wrote before, this thought about purpose was working in my mind all the time. Yesterday I stumbled over a paragraph in a book, that connected COMPLETELY.
ReplyDeleteThis is from one of Rollo Mays works, and i hope i don´t get sued for quoting:
"Every organism has one and only one central need in life, to fullfill it´s own potentialities" He continues by saying that joy is the result of using our powers to the fullest. For that reason he says, Joy, not happiness, is the goal of life.
This was a major epiphany for me. Before I gave this topic some serious thought (thanks for the kickoff bobby), I would have said that being happy each and every day would be the purpose I`m aiming for..
But when you´re making it your goal to life up to (and constantly expand!) your potential, you´ll not only find happiness when you succeed in something, but you´ll also find a tremendous amount of learning experience (aka improvement of self) in failure, and you´ll learn to appreciate BOTH sides of the medal that´s commonly known as life.
Does this make sense to anyone else beside me? lol...
Hey we should do a Q&A on this some time :-)
It doesn't matter a person's origins, their paths, their choices, or the level of intensity from each...We are all each in our own states of mind/heart/whatever leading towards a revelation/dream we hold within ourselves for whatever reason in the world. Some are conscious of this, some aren't. Some can seamlessly convey their passions or vision, whether through clear communication or from mangled, mixed messages steaming from their own scattered minds, feeling hampered by maybe a lack of confidence, or from a 'tragic past'...
ReplyDeleteYou may be wondering, "why all this vague talk? Get to the point", and the point I'm trying to make is that those combinations, at whatever levels, as mentioned above is what makes a character. It's those 'levels' of clarity through self-exploration that leads to behavior, which leads to how 'swift' a character is, how 'charismastic' he/she could be in his own actions and presence. After all this, when a character, no matter their 'state', is protrayed upon a screen, the audience can instantly relate through themselves to that character, through exagerations of their actions.
I'm starting to sound sorta lofty, so I'm going to stop, I think, eh heh...
The idea sounded so clear in my mind. It seems I have my own exploration to do.
:D Btw, I'm a new student starting the upcoming Springboard workshop... I've been into drawing since kindergarten, which has always been a sort of meditation and exploration for me, though it wasn't conducted through words, but through the images and characters I would try to draw... I still need to improve alot as an artist and person to be a good animator.
I also want to thank you for establishing Animation Mentor.
You should look upon that and your animation career and realize how truly an inspiration person you are already, self-exploration or not(and I believe to have accomplished those things required that you have introspected before, somehow). There's some people in this world that can't find the confidence within themselves to even imagine themselves doing such things, or to even face life's questions. I'm actually inspired that you would type such an article, because even an action of a character, no matter what area of the body or motion, is a 'character' or a reflection, in and of itself. Or maybe I'm thinking too hard. What I mean to say, as some people have already mentioned, that exploration is very pertinant to animation and art overall.
Great stuff, Bobby. You might want to check this guy out, I've been listening to his talks online recently and it has been helpful to me during a difficult time:

GREAT STUFF! Wow, as I read I'm totally blown away. I'm going to be posting something new in a few moments which may be adding to my immediate feelings.

I agree, as I've been one of those people. However, I don't think it's safe to live there too long, nor do I think it's healthy to surround yourself with people who support those beliefs. I've said before "Your life is a direct reflection of the expectations of your peer group." I've recently made HUGE leaps in surrounding myself with people who push me to new heights in life. I think that is something that has really added to the quality of my life for sure and I say this becuase, like most things, happiness and joy are things that don't necessarily come for free or are innate. I personally experiece a high level of joy and gratitude every day and if I didn't take conscious efforts to make these things happen I would be in a completely different place in my life.
Micha, that is awesome to read! I would even go so far to say the gratitude is something that needs to be super high up on that list, too.
Wow, how inspiring to be sharing like this. Thanks for opening up and being free.
Patricia, I just got my first book by Eckhart Tolle and have not read it yet. Maybe this is my next read!
Great Post Bobby!
ReplyDeleteLife is such a wonderful crazy experience, ever changing and evolving. I often try looking to my inner self for guidance. It is always a pleasure to read questions and discussions on leading an inspired life.
I have recently stumbled upon great Inspirational podcasts from Michael Neil and Dr Wayne Dyer.
Keep up the super cool Blogging man:)
Cool post Bobby,
ReplyDeleteMy fav part is regarding "who you want to be when someone cuts you off in traffic or your wallet is stolen" heh. These situations tend to bring out the worst in us but I am always impressed by people who react with good nature /humor during crisis.
In a lot of the story/screenwriting books out there it's re-iterated over and over that a characters true nature is only revealed under pressure, and the greater the pressure the greater the truth. I like to muse that I would be cool the headed guy that steers the plummeting plane to safety, but I think more likely i`d be the one who screams like woman "were allll gonna die!!"
Cheers
I wouldn't say that those questions were touchy feely whatsoever. it's actually very refreshing to see things in this light and know that the people who can answer these questions are accomplished, focused and stimulating human beings to be around. We're in the lucky third as far as being born priviledged, so our motivations towards others are that much more important...A little off topic I know, but thanks for posting those blogs; very much worth reading and considering day to day.
