Reduce the "suck factor" - Step 2

In my blog posted titled "STAGES OF LEARNING AND GROWTH" I talked about the 4 stages of developmental growth. At the end I said I would talk about the things I do to reduce time spent in step 2. I call this, "reducing the suck factor."

This is a very personal post to me and something that is very ME. I'm not sure this would work for everyone, but this is what I do.

I hate to "suck" at anything. I really do. I figured life is too short to suck at something for too long and the fact that we don't have to makes this point one of my drivers when learning something new.

I'm a highly motivated person and have found some key things that help me reduce the suck factor:

1. Find someone who does what you want to do, and who is outstanding at what they do, and learn from them.
This means, if you can, learn directly from that person. Once I really embraced this concept I started using it all over in my life.

I find this method good when learning a new skill that is not a "mental" skill (I'll talk about that in #4 below). This works well for things like, martial arts, musical instruments, kiteboarding, snowboarding, salsa dancing, animation (Hey, animation mentor... there's a good idea :)

2. Go in 1,000%!
Again, these things work for me and work well at reducing the suck factor, but if you dilly dally around this will only complicate time spent in step 2.

3. Find your TRUE motivation
in order to create a change in your life you really have to find the real reason WHY you want that change. If you can find a compelling reason that you want that change you WILL find the time to go at it 1,000%. If you want to learn more about how to find this motivation read, Awaken the Giant Within (not the audio version as it is VERY truncated. Read the book. It's HUGE and full of GOLD).

4. Get a coach
A life coach is great at working on personal growth. I find personal development hard to do with a mentor; they typically do not have the time for this. I find getting a good life coach has helped me a HUGE deal at learning important life growth skills.

My criteria for finding a good coach is to make sure they can push me and hold me accountable. If they give me an "assignment" to do and I don't do it and they let me slide, I get rid of that coach and fast. It's like a personal trainer for the most important skills of all.

I've had HUGE good luck at finding great life coaches from The Coach Connection. They meet with you once a week (or more, or less, if needed) over the phone and work with you. I've found that more than once a week is too much and that less than once a week makes me lazy; i.e. no momentum.

These are just a few of the BIG things I do to reduce time spent in step 2. I hope you find these helpful!

  1. This is awesome!!! The only way to get better at something is to seek out the ones who really know how. To say you've learned enough is like giving up on life's opportunities.
I agree 100% with your new posting (or should I say... 1,000%!)

  4. I think these are all great points Bobby.

I'd also like to add that if you're aiming for something. Always imagine a scenario where you've achieved that goal. The recognition you'd get from everyone around you.
I think it can really help you're drive and enthusiasm, especially through the difficult period of learning a new trade.

  5. I am currently a student at AM and feel like I am currently stuck at "suck factor". I have had great Mentors and they have provided the feedback I have needed to grow. What happens, however, when you doubt yourself and start that spiral of questioning everything? I find that I get *down* and am afraid and anxious to do what it takes to move forward?

  7. Stray Neutrino (Peter) - I just took at look at your progress reel on your AM workspace. DUDE, great work! The shot of Stewie with the sword and shield is GOLDEN man. Your acting is also looking VERY solid!

It's easy to lose steam. When I lose steam I surround myself with friends who pick me up. I never dwell on the negative too long. I have this "special skill" that my wife is amazing by. I am an eternal optimist as she says :) I always see the positive, even in the negative. I think it comes back to some things I learned from Tony Robbins many MANY years ago about our stories become our reality. He also says, see it as it is, not worse than it is.

The truth is that you work IS great man. That's the truth. Stay focused and you will go a long way in this industry. If you lose steam get together with friends, go to the movies. PM or AMconnect with me, etc.

Suzanne, no it doesn't matter if they know the industry at all. I've never seen that make a difference. A life coach is going to work on your DNA stuff. stuff that is DEEP to your being. Such as telling yourself stories that are not true, I'm not good enough, I'm ugly, I don't deserve this, Nothings wrong with me, it's their fault, they made me do it... etc. That's the stuff they help you deal with. that stuff IS the toughest of all, and why having a coach makes such a big difference. At least for me, and many others I've knowns too.

  12. Thanks for the post!

One thing I have just started recently that helps a lot is to plan my whole day with Google Calendar. It seems funny, but if I schedule my whole day, breaks included, I can stay on track a lot better.

I think it's because if you have a task set for a specific amount of time (I usually do 2 hours), then there is a clear "goal" in view and you don't have to consider the immensity of the overall project.
